Infighting hobbles local dancing community. It's time to change the tune
Your report on November 27 highlighted that the 'Philippines are unbeatable in dancesport'. The Philippines won the gold and silver medals in the standard and Latin categories at the 23rd SEA Games dancesport competition.
It is ironic that a humble dance studio in HDB heartland in Bishan contributed to the success of the Philippines standard dancers. Not many people know that the gold and silver medalists were coached by Singapore's very own son Melvyn Low, the grandson of the late Low Poh San and son of Mr Sunny Low.
Mr Melvyn Low and his wife Nancy are the current undefeated (14 times) Southeast Asia standard ballroom dancing champions. Had they competed in the Games, the other countries will have only the silver and bronze medals to fight for. With their exclusion, Singapore has lost a certain gold medal in the standard category.
Why did Singapore not send the best men and women for the Games? It boils down to politics and the infighting in the dancing fraternity.
Ballroom dancing is a lucrative business for dance instructors in Singapore. Due to the intense business rivalry among dance instructors, dancesport has suffered and the standard has dropped despite the large number of competitions that were organised.
In 2005, there were eight international competitions. Only two were registered with SGDF because most of our dance studios and their teachers do not see eye to eye with the national body.
Students are discouraged from joining SGDF and competing in SGDF-sanctioned competitions. The students themselves do not want to join SGDF because they are banned from competing in non-registered competitions.
As a result, the national body has a pathetic membership. Hence there's hardly any talent to carry the national flag. Look at SGDF's ranking list of competitors and you will know the answer.
In the interest of our country, I urge all parties concerned to put aside their differences. The challenge is for Mr Robert Ong, SGDF's president, to unite the fragmented dancing fraternity.

AND sleaze. when there are boundaries that are over-stepped and yet you dont know if you are over-reacting or he's just being affectionately playful, because it's dance and it requires a certain level of intimacy. or to attribute it to the booze.
i decided to tell you even though i knew you would chastise me. maybe you ought to try surprising me sometimes.
